A Systematic Approach to Consultant Pharmacy Services


Overview

This two-day course is intended for pharmacists who wish to become licensed as consultant pharmacists and consultant pharmacists who need consultant recertification credit to maintain their license. This course will prepare future consultant pharmacists for the board required licensure exam. The course content consists of a comprehensive study of laws, regulations, and procedures for pharmacists who want to consult in a nursing facility, hospital, or other work environments that require the services of a consultant pharmacist.

This course will achieve the following:

  • Prepare pharmacists to serve as consultants in nursing homes and hospital pharmacies
  • Provide pharmacists with knowledge of the responsibilities of a consultant pharmacist
  • Prepare pharmacists to develop quality systems for assuring safe drug delivery and patient monitoring
  • Teach pharmacists readiness for AHCA inspections.

Initial Certification and Recertification for Consultant Pharmacist

Target Audience

Intended Audience for Initial Certification

  • Pharmacist who wish to become licensed as consultant pharmacist in Florida

Intended Audience for Recertification

  • Pharmacists who wish to retain his/her Florida Consultant pharmacist license and needs recertification credit

General Continuing Pharmacy Education Hours

  • This course is accredited for 12 hours of  live continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit for pharmacists who do not wish to apply for a Consultant Pharmacist License.
  • To receive credit, you must attend the full day on Friday, the morning session on Saturday, and complete the online program evaluation.
  • The schedule of activities includes 1.5 days of interactive lectures.
  • Credit will be applied toward your NABP and CE Broker licenses. The University of Florida College of Pharmacy will report CPE credit to CPE Monitor and CE Broker when applicable. If you would like a paper statement of credit, you may print it from your NABP e-profile.

Objectives 

At the conclusion of this course participants should be able to:

  • List the licensing and proficiency requirements to obtain a consultant pharmacist license.
  • Relate how a policy and procedures manual should be developed and utilized.
  • Describe how to evaluate (review) medication orders in a hospital or nursing home:
    • For appropriate indication or diagnosis
    • For drug interactions with other medication
    • For duplication of therapy; appropriate drug dose
    • For interval and route of administration
  • State the requirements for handling all drugs including controlled substances.
  • Analyze the source and rationale for State and Federal regulations governing pharmaceutical services in institutional pharmacy settings such as residential care facilities, jails, psychiatric care units and hospitals.
