Diabetes is becoming an increasingly common and complex disease state to manage. This four part course provides a comprehensive review and guide to the management of diabetes. Part one provides a review of pathophysiology and epidemiology of diabetes, as well as discussing preventive measures. Also covered is diagnosis, goals of therapy, and monitoring of diabetes based on current guidelines and clinical trials. Part two focuses on patient education, including nutrition, exercise, self-monitoring of glucose, medication administration, among other topics.

In part three, all of the different classes of diabetes medications are discussed in detail along with algorithms and practical approaches to managing diabetes. Part four reviews the various complications and co-morbidities associated with diabetes. Preventative and treatment strategy discussions are included. Finally, cases are provided for you to practice applying your knowledge and skills to various situations.


Module Objectives

Module 1: Diabetes Basics

  • Discuss the risk factors and pathophysiology of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Discuss the prevention of diabetes mellitus
  • Discuss criteria for diagnosing diabetes mellitus
  • Discuss goals of therapy for diabetes mellitus
  • Discuss monitoring of diabetes mellitus

Module 2: Providing Education to the Patient with Diabetes

    • Discuss principles and benefits of diabetes self-management education (DSME)
    • Describe the American Association of Diabetes Educators AADE7TM Self-Care Behaviors
    • Assess a patient’s knowledge, willingness and ability to perform self-care behaviors
    • Educate patients regarding nutrition, exercise, and blood glucose monitoring recommendations
    • Recognize insulin delivery devices and review proper insulin administration
    • Evaluate a patient’s problem solving skills related to hypo- and hyperglycemia management

Module 3: Pharmacologic Management of Diabetes Mellitus

  • Discuss the mechanism of action, benefits, adverse effects, interactions and monitoring for antihyperglycemic agents
  • Demonstrate ability to design an appropriate pharmacologic treatment plan for a patient with diabetes
  • Demonstrate ability to modify an existing diabetes pharmacologic plan based on patient specific variables

Module 4: Diabetes Mellitus: Complications and Co-Morbidities

  • Recommend appropriate immunizations for patients with diabetes
  • Assess patients for complications associated with diabetes and ways to help prevent these complications
  • Determine risk of a patient developing microvascular and macrovascular complications
  • Describe treatment of microvascular and macrovascular complications in diabetes

Credit Reporting

  • The University of Florida College of Pharmacy will report CPE credit to CPE Monitor and CE Broker when applicable. If you would like a paper statement of credit, you may print it from your NABP e-profile.
  • All pharmacists and pharmacy technicians maintain their own license and/or certification and it is their responsibility to follow up with the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Florida if any CE credit discrepancies are found.
  • It is at the University’s discretion to award or deny credit to a late claiming participant (i.e. after 60 days of the participant engaging in a CPE activity) as it is the University’s CE activity and the provider needs to ensure the requirements necessary for credit are successfully completed.
  • The University may request access to CPE Monitor® if the activity in question occurred within the previous 6 months and with an appropriate reason for access, i.e. power outage, etc.

Course must be completed within 10 weeks. Upon completion of all four modules of the course you will accumulate 27 hours of CPE credit or 2.7 CEUs. Then, upon the recommendation of your facilitator, we will send you a Certificate of Completion as a record of your accomplishments.
